The Australian way of life is a highly appealing one. The country has a good economy with plenty of job opportunities to allow you to prosper. The climate is excellent and the scenery is stunning and we’re seeing more Britons than ever immigrating over there.
Moving to Australia is a dream for most and in order to make this dream a successful reality you need to go through the migration process. The process of applying for residency in Australia can often take time so to ensure that you get the process completed in the quickest time and in the correct manner you need to ensure that you know exactly what forms you need to fill in and exactly what documents you need to gather.
This mini guide is designed to help you understand certain aspects of the migration process so that you can get it underway.
You clearly need your passport when you are moving to Australia. Your passport has to be valid and it is advised that you have your passport for a length of time before attempting to enter Australia. You also need a valid visa when applying to move to Australia, this includes all electronic visas. The type of visa you apply for depends on why you are applying to move to Australia such as is it for a job? Or to live with family? And so on.
Once you have applied for your visa you will have to complete and sign an incoming passenger card. This incoming passenger card is a document providing your identification and a record of your entry and departure to Australia.
Another aspect to keep in mind when it comes to moving to Australia is your health requirements. You need to meet certain health requirements before you will be granted your visa. This doesn’t affect everyone but you will need to undergo a health examination if any of the following apply:
- You are likely to enter a hospital or other health care environment, including nursing homes as either a patient, visitor, trainee or employee
- You are likely to enter a classroom environment, including Nursery, crèche and child care situations
- You are known or suspected of having a medical condition, regardless of your length of stay
- You are aged 70 years or older
- There are indications that you may not meet the health requirement.
As well as health requirements you will also need to meet character requirements, which may include the need to produce police certificates for each country that you have lived in for other 12 months. You should only be prepared to do this if asked to; you do not need to do it as part of your visa application.
A fairly new requirement is now also needed from all potential migrants who are over the age of 18. This is the requirement to sign a values statement when applying for certain visas. This was brought into action on the 15th October 2005. You are signing to say that you will respect the Australian way of life and obey the laws of Australia, this forms part of your visa application and is required before a visa will be granted.
