As you already know New Zealand can be split into two islands known simply as the North and South. We have already covered the places to live within the North of the Island so now we will concentrate on the South of the Island.
Within the South of the Island there are two main places known as Christchurch and Dunedin. Christchurch has a population of over 310,000 people and is the largest city in the South of the Island. Christchurch is also described as the most English of all the New Zealand cities. Also the pace of life within the South of the Island is a lot slower than the North, which can be reflected in the relaxed, reserved but friendly atmosphere that surrounds Christchurch and its residents.
There is a lot of appealing features within Christchurch such as the oriented city centre, which has a park with a river running through it. Another appealing feature of living within Christchurch is that it gives you the option of living a mere 20 minutes away from the heart of the city centre while still enjoying all of the delights and advantages of a rural lifestyle. If you are hoping to relocate to New Zealand to live near the beach then you may reconsider moving to Christchurch as within the winter months you will be hit by cold winds, which cause a lot of the shoreline to be undeveloped; however this does give you an advantage in the summer months as the fact the beaches are undeveloped with create remote beaches during the summer months.
The second largest city within the South of the Island is Dunedin, which has a population of about 110,000. This city has a big Scottish influence and was once the wealthiest city within New Zealand. Dunedin has an array of distinctive buildings and is also home to the Otago University, which is highly acclaimed for its medical school.
When it comes to housing in Dunedin the prices are a lot cheaper than they are in Christchurch but you need to bare in mind, prices aren’t the main thing to consider when it comes to choosing your new home in New Zealand; you need to think about factors such as is it convenient for where you will be working?
Within Dunedin there is a large port, which creates easy access to the sea and the beaches than Dunedin has to offer. The area of Dunedin is rather hilly and the city contains the steepest street in the world. If the idea of living in or around the city doesn’t appeal to you then there are a number of urban areas, which range in population from 48,000 in Hamilton to 20,000 in Masterton. What should be noted is that all of the places within New Zealand have individual personalities so you need to think and research carefully into where you decide to set up home.
