Your motor vehicle has to be declared to customs and you will have to pay duty on it. This duty rate is normally roughly 20%. The customs value of a motor vehicle is derived from the transaction value i.e. the price paid for the imported vehicle, you also need to provide a declaration in the format of the form SC-A-012. This form has to be submitted to customs with the following documents:
- Commercial Invoice, Bill of Lading
- Freight and Insurance Papers
- Bills/Receipts relating to other charges
- Documents relating to exhaust emission test, windscreen test, etc
- Vehicle Data Card
- If previously registered the vehicle's registration and/or de-registration documents
- A manufacturer's letter confirming the date of manufacture of the vehicle.
It should be noted that the transaction value needs to be adjusted to reflect other charges, which includes commissions, assists, packing costs, proceeds of resale accruing to the seller, royalties and license fees etc.
Your car will also be required to pass a mechanical inspection at the Land Transport Authority (LTA) before it is possible for it to be registered.
