When it comes to importing certain goods into the USA there are restrictions in place surrounding certain personal effects.
Vehicles
When it comes to importing vehicles into the USA they must conform to the safety and emissions regulations; however if your vehicle is over 25 years old they will be excluded from these regulations. Every vehicle that is being shipped to the USA must undergo testing to ensure that they are complying with the regulations surrounding safety in the USA. Vehicles which do not pass emissions testing will be taken to approved sites for modifications at the owner's expense. The cost to have the car brought up to standards after importation is exorbitant and additionally there will be bond fees or cash deposit. Vehicles being imported to the USA are also subject to duty and state taxes unless they were previously exported from the USA; this is subject to if the transferee has proof of exportation and/or proof auto was originally manufactured and sold in the U.S
As well as motor vehicles you also need the right documentation to bring inherited goods to the USA. In order to bring inherited goods across to the USA with you it is important that you have:
- A copy of the death certificate
- Inventory
- The cost of each item
As well as bring personal effects and household goods with you to the USA, many people also like to bring their pets with them as well. Although it was previously mentioned that animals couldn’t be brought across to the states with you; this was only concerning animals not considered pets. You are allowed to bring pets across the USA bored as long as they conform to restrictions. Dogs and cats are not required to stay in quarantine when they enter the USA with one exception, Hawaii. When dogs and cats are being imported into Hawaii they are required to stay in quarantine for six months. However some birds may be required to stay in quarantine. All pets must have a valid health certificate from a veterinary surgeon and have proof of vaccination against rabies.
