If you help your parents to pack and move, always remember these following tips:
1. Plan ahead. Seniors need time to get used to the change. Give time to adjust to the idea of moving. Don't rush and allow enough time to sort and pack their personal things. It's difficult and emotional times. Be patient.
2. Start slow. Talk to your parents about moving. Don't let them feel rushed. After all agreed, have them start slow. One room at a time. Usually start organizing a basement or an attic - places with items that not used often, or start organizing items with least sentimental values. This will help to get used to the idea of moving and giving away things.
3. Get floor plans and pictures of new place. After so many years living in one place it's hard to get used to a new one. Try to place furniture and personal items in the same order they were before, so the new place feels more familiar. This helps make the new place feel like home.
4. Be patient. Sorting thru things and packing might take more time than you planed. Especially if you try to fit 3 bedrooms content into one bedroom. It's easier to give things away to family members that just get rid of things. If it's a treasure but the new space can't accommodate it, suggest giving it to a grandchild or another sibling.
5. Hire moving services. If you are too emotionally involved or just lack patience, it's better sometimes to hire services of professional moving company. There are moving companies who specialize in seniors moving and packing.
6. Move with the pet. If your parents have a pet, try to find place where pets are allowed. This will drastically reduce the emotional stress of moving to a new house.
7. Rent self storage unit. If some things are too difficult to give away, rent a self storage unit. You can deal with them later and save some stress now.
8. Take photos of things that you give away. You will miss them some day. By having photos you can remember family events thru the pictures.
9. Set up the new place quickly. It will feel like home as soon as you set it up and place everything from the old place into a new one.
10. Visit the new home often. At least in the beginning, you and other family members visit the new place daily.
