Established in 1857, Over’s of Camberley is one of the oldest removal companies in the UK. In fact, Over’s is older than Camberley.
When the Royal Military Academy arrived at Sandhurst in 1831, there rapidly became a need for staff to serve the college, which lead to houses being built. The new, spreading settlement was first given the name “New Town”, later becoming Yorktown around 1848. In 1878 the first railway arrived, along with the new name, “Camberley”.
The company was started by Richard Parnell Over who opened a Drapery in 1857 to serve officers, their families and other local businesses. He worked from a simple, single-fronted premises that had been built by his father-in-law 7 years earlier. Richard’s four sons joined the growing family business that had grown to supplying furnishings before moving to a new premises in The Avenue.
The furniture required deliveries and with few local people owning vehicles, Over’s moved into removals to fill the growing demand.
After a fire destroyed the shop, a new store was designed by local architects, the Poulter brothers. Still growing and still family owned, in the 1960s Over’s moved to swanky, purpose-built premises on the corner of High Street and Park Street and though the department store closed its doors in the 1990s, the removals company continued. Primark now occupies what was Over’s department store.
In 1992, Over’s were one of just two companies involved in removals from Windsor Castle for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, following the fire that destroyed 115 rooms inside what is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world.
As well as royals, rock stars, movie icons and MPs, Over’s has moved tens of thousands of families. In 2010, it joined forces to become part of The Armishaws Group.
More joining took place, becoming a member of the British Association of Removers and signing the Armed Forces Covenant, a pledge made by companies and organisations to support our Armed Forces and veterans.
As time and awareness changed, Over’s and The Armishaws Group began focusing on the future planting the first seeds of our Eco Pledge. The group has made a commitment to using recycled and recyclable materials in every move and beginning a tree planting and rewilding program.
