Ascot wears its ‘Royal’ title at a jaunty angle, like a lady’s fascinator on race day but and roots can be traced back to the Iron Age. The name which derives from Anglo-Saxon means ‘East Cote’ or eastern settlement (in relation to what was Easthampstead a Royal estate). In fact, the whole area was mostly royal hunting grounds with very few villages or homes and virtually no farming.
The regal moniker stems from Ascot forming part of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, Windsor being the site of Windsor Castle which has been home to English monarchs since William the Conqueror had a new ‘des-res’ built in the 11th century.
The town’s name is thought to be the inspiration for Astolat in Sir Thomas Malory’s Le Morte d’Arthur written in 1470. Astolat is the site where Sir Lancelot (of King Arthur fame) was introduced to the daughter of Sir Bernard, the young maiden fell in love with the good-looking knight who didn’t reciprocate her ardor. She died of a broken heart while Lancelot lived to woo again.
The town is perhaps best known for Ascot Racecourse which opened on the 11th of August 1711 and has its own royal connection, Royal Ascot, one of the biggest race meetings on the Jockey Club’s calendar. As well as racing, the course hosts live events throughout the year attracting big names from the world of music such as Nile Rogers, Simply Red, Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, 80’s revival nights and many more. Locals can also pop along to drive in cinema nights, fireworks, comedy and food festivals.
After the racecourse came Sunningdale Golf Course in 1900, which has also brought visitors flocking to the area which is now one of the most sought after addresses in England.
Professional touring productions can be found at the Novello Theatre but there are also local theatre groups in the town that put on regular performances, in a town that has had more than a few famous performers taking up residence including two of The Beatles. Engineering fans can head to the Ascot Locomotive Society (at Royal Ascot Golf Club), while foodies can get their fill at the regular Farmers Market which takes place in the Hight Street. For a number of years Ascot has featured in the UK’s top 20 most expensive towns with the average house price being estimated at over £1,000,000.
