    5 Quirky Facts About Ascot

    1. Royal Ascot
Ascot racecourse was created by Queen Anne in 1711 and gave the track its Royal status. But it wasn’t until 2013 that a horse owned by Queen Elizabeth II became the first royally owned horse to win the Gold Cup.
    2. And They’re Off!
More than 300,000 racegoers attend Royal Ascot over 5 days (which accounts for 5% of annual UK race attendees at this single meeting!). 1,000 limousines and 400 helicopters are used to transport high-flying guests.
    3. Big Plates
During the event, hungry punters will get through; 3,500 lobsters, 5,000kg of salmon, 21,000 bottles of Pimms, 44,000 bottles of wine, 56,000 bottles of bubbly, 60,000 sandwiches and 240,000 cakes from the 100+ food and drink outlets.
    4. Stand & Deliver!
It’s not just thoroughbreds, the London to Southampton road that passed through Ascot was once a popular hunting ground for highwaymen (and women, robbing stagecoaches was an equal opportunities form of employment!).
    5. Famous Neighbours
Radio and TV presenter Chris Evans, popstar Sarah Harding (Girls Aloud), Marti Pellow (Wet Wet Wet) and two of The Beatles, John Lennon and Ringo Starr once owned homes in Ascot. Other familiar faces include Chris Evans (TV & radio presenter), popstar Sarah Harding (Girls Aloud) and James Haskell (rugby player).

Darryn and Kyle, the two removal men were just brilliant in carrying out their duties. Nothing was too much trouble. They are an asset to your company and great Ambassadors for your business. My wife and I felt on occasions they went above and beyond the normal service and went out of their way to help ease the process and stress of moving.

    - Andy Cookson – June 2021

The two crew movers that moved me are exceptional. Polite, hardworking, and professional. Nothing was too much, no problems or complaints. They packed, moved me out, and moved me in. Constantly ensuring everything was where I wanted it and fine tune placement of my items. I could not have moved in without their, and the team at Armishaws efforts. Thank you for getting (injured) me, and my family in our new home safe and complete.

    - Alan Edmunds - June 2021

Excellent removals experience on a two day local move in Somerset. Despite hail, the removals men did a fantastic job, and kept a sense of humour throughout. Nothing was too much trouble putting things where we wanted them in various sheds when we arrived. Toby and Ben made the experience SO much more fun, and less stressful. Cannot recommend them too highly.

    - Helen Williams – May 2021

    Iron Age

Ascot wears its ‘Royal’ title at a jaunty angle, like a lady’s fascinator on race day but and roots can be traced back to the Iron Age. The name which derives from Anglo-Saxon means ‘East Cote’ or eastern settlement (in relation to what was Easthampstead a Royal estate). In fact, the whole area was mostly royal hunting grounds with very few villages or homes and virtually no farming.

    11th Century

    Over's Removals

The regal moniker stems from Ascot forming part of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, Windsor being the site of Windsor Castle which has been home to English monarchs since William the Conqueror had a new ‘des-res’ built in the 11th century.

    15th Century

The town’s name is thought to be the inspiration for Astolat in Sir Thomas Malory’s Le Morte d’Arthur written in 1470. Astolat is the site where Sir Lancelot (of King Arthur fame) was introduced to the daughter of Sir Bernard, the young maiden fell in love with the good-looking knight who didn’t reciprocate her ardor. She died of a broken heart while Lancelot lived to woo again.

    18th Century

The town is perhaps best known for Ascot Racecourse which opened on the 11th of August 1711 and has its own royal connection, Royal Ascot, one of the biggest race meetings on the Jockey Club’s calendar. As well as racing, the course hosts live events throughout the year attracting big names from the world of music such as Nile Rogers, Simply Red, Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, 80’s revival nights and many more. Locals can also pop along to drive in cinema nights, fireworks, comedy and food festivals.

    Over's Truck

    20th Century

After the racecourse came Sunningdale Golf Course in 1900, which has also brought visitors flocking to the area which is now one of the most sought after addresses in England.

Professional touring productions can be found at the Novello Theatre but there are also local theatre groups in the town that put on regular performances, in a town that has had more than a few famous performers taking up residence including two of The Beatles. Engineering fans can head to the Ascot Locomotive Society (at Royal Ascot Golf Club), while foodies can get their fill at the regular Farmers Market which takes place in the Hight Street. For a number of years Ascot has featured in the UK’s top 20 most expensive towns with the average house price being estimated at over £1,000,000.
