A Quick History of Bicester
643
The first settlement is built on the crossroads of two former Roman roads.
1183
An Augustinian priory is founded by local noble, Gilbert Bassett.
1239
King Henry III grants a charter for a weekly market, creating the current ‘Market Square’.
1642
Bicester houses Parliamentarian forces keeping an eye on King Charles new base at Oxford during the Civil War.
1725
A charity school is opened where children, as well as learning, are put to work by the school’s owners.
1793
Lord of the manor John Coker raises a local militia, the ‘Association for the Protection of Property against Levellers and Jacobins’ to defend against an invasion by Napoleon’s troops and put down any attempts at an English revolution.
1826
Public buildings are destroyed during a riot protesting against poor wages by the local quarry owner.
1830
The Bicester Emigration Committee raises £1000 to send 71 adults and 40 children to America and help cleanse the town of ‘paupers’.
1917
During World War I the Royal Flying Corps set up an airfield close to the town.
1941
RAF Bicester houses fighters and bombers during the Second World War. Today it’s home to a gliding club.
2014
The town is made a ‘Garden City’, increasing green development as well as plans for 13,000 new, more sustainable homes.
