An Augustinian priory is founded by local noble, Gilbert Bassett.

1239

King Henry III grants a charter for a weekly market, creating the current ‘Market Square’.

A charity school is opened where children, as well as learning, are put to work by the school’s owners.

Lord of the manor John Coker raises a local militia, the ‘Association for the Protection of Property against Levellers and Jacobins’ to defend against an invasion by Napoleon’s troops and put down any attempts at an English revolution.
