According to local legend, Ambarrow and Edgebarrow are burial mounds (barrows) that mark the passing of two opposing Viking/Anglo-Saxon armies after a huge battle. Gruesome and sadly not true, the two hills are actually naturally occurring topographic features. Sandhurst is named after the local geography, ‘hurst’ being a wooded hill, ‘sand’ referring to the sandy soil. In fact, there is very little evidence or record of Sandhurst during the Anglo-Saxon period.
It certainly didn’t make the Doomsday Book (1086) and wasn’t’ recorded at all until 1175 when the first tax record appears under Henry II. Yes, one thing remains constant… you will pay your taxes!
The small farming community on the very edge of Windsor Forest seems an unlikely spot that would eventually educate royalty from around the world, but it was just a sleepy homestead for centuries. The locals were given certain privileges allowing them to hunt, cut turf and use wood from the forest, although punishments were extremely harsh for anyone judged to have taken more than their entitlement. Prince Arthur, elder brother of Henry VIII, travelled through the location whilst wooing his future bride Catherine of Aragon (after his brother’s death Henry would also make her his bride and she was one of two of his six wives to outlive him).
Just two years before the Battle of Waterloo, the Royal Military Academy moved from its previous site in Marlow to Sandhurst. The rugged, terrain of the heathland at the edges of the forest made it a good location for training men, it was also close enough to London and important naval locations on the south coast.
The next big arrival was the railroad which helped speed up traffic immeasurably. The new rail network and establishment of two more major institutions, Wellington College and Broadmoor Hospital in nearby Crowthorne, saw the population boom as entire towns built up around the three major sites, serving the residents, students and providing staffing.
The town is now mostly associated with the training academy; Prince William, Prince Harry, the King of Bahrain, King Hussein of Jordan, the Grand Duke of Luxemburg, Oswald Mosely, Sir Winston Churchill, Ian Flemming, James Blunt, Will Carling, Murray Walker, Keith Floyd, Tim Peake… The list of former students is as long as the rope used in tug of war. Sandhurst has a strange connection with tug of war and has even hosted the World Finals.
Today the modern town is full of trendy shops and coffee houses, good restaurants and offers easy transport connections for commuters to or from the town.
