The first settlers moving to Bordon arrived during the Iron Age and built a hill fort at Walldown. The next people to really leave their mark were the Romans, as well as evidence of a few villas in the area, the big event of the Roman Era was a battle at Woolmer between Emperor Constantius Chlorus and Allectus, both fighting to take control of Britain. Subsequently a few collections of coins dating to the era have been unearthed throughout the area and they may well be connected to the battle (some historians claim they may have been buried by fleeing soldiers).
The introduction of the name Bordon begins in 1230, when it was actually ‘Burdunesdene’ bur (burgh) = fortified settlement, dun = hill, den = valley, which suggests it was a hill fort above a valley. Like many old English place names, it became simplified over the centuries.
Close to where Blackmoor Golf Course now lies was a ‘Warren’ a Norman invention, it was an area kept to breed rabbits which were a luxury for both meat and their fur. Henry III also gave Blackmoor land to the Knights Templar who maintained a manor there.
One surprising name to be linked with the area is Henry VIII. At the time still known as Prince Hal, Henry was made Ranger of Woolmer, a title he held until he became King and went on to develop a love of wedding cake.
In 1863 the War Department purchased 781 acres for training grounds not far from the Army’s new head quarters at Aldershot. Two camps were built, one of them Bordon Camp which played important roles in numerous conflicts such as the build up to D-Day in the Second World War. The first camp at Bordon was built in 1899 by the Highland Light Infantry, other troops to eventually be stationed there included regiments from Wiltshire, Devonshire, Somerset, Argyll and Sutherland Borderers, Royal Engineers and more. Additional camps were built during WWII, including camps for Canadian troops stationed in the area. The camps even had their own railway network running between them. Army firing ranges have also been in operation in Longmoor Forest just to the south of the town.
In 2009 Bordon was unveiled as one of the government’s new Eco Towns, with plans to become carbon neutral. Locals, initially in favour, soon campaigned against the plans which required new roads and infrastructure, a loss of forest, wildlife habitat and protestors claimed the consultation process had been rigged. Funding was cut by half, the scheme waned and today the good green folk of Bordon pursue their own eco targets to make the town a greener place to live.
