The first settlers move to the area around Milton Keynes.

585 – 919 CE

During this period the county forms part of the Kingdom of Mercia.

914

King Edward the Elder builds two fortified towns on either side of the River Great Ouse at what is now Buckingham to defend against Viking attacks.

During his reign William the Conqueror annexes most of the manors for himself and his family.

1529

Henry VIII makes Aylesbury the county town in order to win favour with owner of Thomas Boleyn, owner of Aylesbury Manor and father of Anne Boleyn.

1642

John Hampden is one of a five MPs to rally against ‘arbitrary’ taxes imposed by Charles I. The attempted arrest of the five sparks the English Civil War.

To commemorate the London Olympics, Dr Ludwig Guttmann organises a mini version at Stoke Mandeville Hospital for wheelchair athletes. With just 16 participants, this event will grow to become the Paralympic Games.
