Early evidence found in the area revealed signs of settlement as far back as the Neolithic Age. There have also been Bronze Age finds as well as a Romano-British site in Lightwater. The area was mostly heathland, little use for farming and the wide open expanses, scrubland and lack of natural shelter made it pretty inhospitable and it remained largely uninhabited apart from a scatting of small hamlets and homes.
By the Middle Ages, like much of Surrey, the area had been claimed by the Crown and vast swathes were declared royal hunting grounds with harsh penalties for any ‘common folk’ found poaching. With the Crown’s protection and deterrents, Surrey Heath was left alone and unsettled until the 1600s.
The advent of coach travel and new routes cutting through the area to connect London with Oxford, Bath and the South West, created a need for coach stations and inns. The roads brought travelers, business and wealth. With the end of the English Civil War, a lack of employment, loss of jobs through new farming methods and an increase of weapons in civilian hands (a hangover from the conflict), beside the increase of ‘easy money’ travelling through the barren landscape made the perfect recipe for a new wave of criminal. The Highwayman! Surrey Heath was ideal. The landscape gave long views over the approaching roads and lots of hidden spots to lie in waiting, plus escape routes for a speedy getaway. Highwaymen became big news, the newspapers turned them into celebrities and names like The Golden Farmer (aka William Davis) and Claude Duval – the gentleman highwayman were uttered with fear. Dick Turpin was also known to have operated along these routes.
In the 1800s the arrival of the Military Academy at Sandhurst created a need for local businesses and traders. The Cambridge Hotel was built and the settlement that grew around it became known as ‘Cambridge Town’. This caused a headache for the Royal Mail with the more established Cambridge, Cambridgeshire (it even had its own county!) so the new Surrey town was renamed. Cam from the river, Amber from Amber Hill as marked on a 1607 map of the area and ley, the old English word for a clearing in woodland.
In 2007 Surrey Heath was voted the 6th best place to live in the UK. Yay Camberley!
