    About Dubai

Ishy Bilady (Long Live my Country)
Saad Abdel Wahab & Dr. Aref Al Sheikh Abdullah Al Hassan
When the United Arab Emirates were formed in 1971, Saad Abdel Wahab (who also wrote the anthems for Tunisia and Libya) wrote the instrumental national anthem. Lyrics were later added in 1986 by Dr. Aref Al Sheikh Abdullah Al Hassan.
Flag of the United Arab Emirates
The flag was formerly adopted on the 2nd of December, 1971 having been designed by 19yr old Abdullah Mohammed Al Maainah, based on the Pan-Arab colours. The colours represent strength, courage and unity (red), purity, cleanliness and peace (white), prosperity (green) and defeating enemies (black). Dubai does have its own separate flag, the White Red Halved which it shares with Ajman.
    “God, Nation, President.”
    Arab Falcon
The golden Arab Falcon features a disc in the centre, depicting the Pan-Arab colours and seven stars for the seven Emirates that make up the UAE.
There is no specific single falcon, however the UAE take their falconry very seriously as a sport. In the UAE Falcons are the only animals allowed to travel on planes as passengers rather than as cargo. Their status is so enshrined that they are only allowed to travel business or first-class. There’s even a specialised hospital in Abu Dhabi that looks after around 12,000 falcons a year.
    Tribulus (Tribulus omanense)
Considered a weed in some countries, it is thought to have medicinal values and produces a spiny fruit (that can even puncture tyres).
    No national sport.
Although there is no recognised national sport, Dubai enjoys its sport and hosts a number of major events in golf, motor racing, horse racing and tennis. Football is considered the most popular sport (most locals supporting Premier League and European teams). Rugby and cricket are both well supported with a Six Nations tournament and rugby sevens. Falconry and camel racing are also hugely popular generating huge revenue, particularly for punters who enjoy a flutter.
    Arabian Oryx
    There is no national dish.
UAE food has certainly been flavoured by the many immigrants that have made UAE home over the centuries. Today American style food can be found everywhere and there is also a taste for high-end dining, while the number of Indian immigrants has had a major impact on traditional dishes. Kabsa is hugely popular and is an old traditional rice-based dish using herbs, spices with chicken or lamb.
While the UAE is a federation with joint interests, each of the seven emirates is ruled by an autocratic monarch and there is no democratic election process. Rule is autocratic and decided by birth into the ruling families dating back generations. The federation does have a president which traditionally is the Emir (ruler) of Abu Dhabi who also holds the titles of supreme commander of the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces and chairman of the Supreme Petroleum Council.
