    Quickfire Merton Facts

    1. Choose Your Weapons
Prime Minister William Pitt fought a duel against the George Tierney, MP for Southwark on Wimbledon Common, now part of Merton, in 1798. Pitt had accused Tierney of being unpatriotic. The duel ended with both parties missing, but the honour was satisfied. Sadly, we’re no longer allowed to call for MPs to settle things through mortal combat.
    2. Have We Got News?
Before becoming a TV and radio regular, the young, aspiring comedian, Paul Martin took inspiration for his stage name from the London borough he grew up in. Merton and TV partner in crime Ian Hislop have also both called for MP’s to settle things by duel.
    3. Coronation Feat
In 1437 Henry VI became the only English King not to be crowned in Westminster Abbey in the last 1,000 years when his own ceremony was held at Merton Priory.
    4. Horatio
At the time of the 1801 census, Merton’s population stood at just 6,382. One gentleman that had moved to Merton that year was the future hero of Trafalgar (and pigeon perch), Lord Horatio Nelson. Today the population is in excess of 200,000.
    5. Water Town
The name ‘Merton’ comes from the Old English for ‘mere’, a pool or area of water, and ‘ton’, settlement of people. Traces of Celtic tribes in Merton Signs of Roman settlements can still be clearly seen and their influence is visible on some roads that follow the original path laid out by the Romans.

Darryn and Kyle, the two removal men were just brilliant in carrying out their duties. Nothing was too much trouble. They are an asset to your company and great Ambassadors for your business. My wife and I felt on occasions they went above and beyond the normal service and went out of their way to help ease the process and stress of moving.

    - Andy Cookson – June 2021

The two crew movers that moved me are exceptional. Polite, hardworking, and professional. Nothing was too much, no problems or complaints. They packed, moved me out, and moved me in. Constantly ensuring everything was where I wanted it and fine tune placement of my items. I could not have moved in without their, and the team at Armishaws efforts. Thank you for getting (injured) me, and my family in our new home safe and complete.

    - Alan Edmunds - June 2021

Excellent removals experience on a two day local move in Somerset. Despite hail, the removals men did a fantastic job, and kept a sense of humour throughout. Nothing was too much trouble putting things where we wanted them in various sheds when we arrived. Toby and Ben made the experience SO much more fun, and less stressful. Cannot recommend them too highly.

    - Helen Williams – May 2021
