Oxshott’s name is thought to derive from Ocga’s land, most likely an early Saxon chieftain. In 1179 it was recorded as ‘Occesete’ and was a small rural village of around 200 people who survived through farming the land that was more fertile than many areas of Surrey. Villagers raised pigs, cut wood from the forest but with little in the way of trade. It was surrounded by heath and scrubland and largely cut off from other towns. This geographical obscurity kept it out of trouble so it mostly managed to avoid the Anarchy, English Civil War.
The somewhat late arrival of the Oxshott and Fairmile Railway Station (pft, typical!) in 1885 totally changed life for the local populace, opening up travel across London to exotic and previously unthinkable destinations like Battersea and Streatham. It also brought large houses as Londoners looking to escape the confines of the city, sought country living but within easy reach of one of the new-fangled railway lines.
Oxshott didn’t become a parish in its own right until 1913 with the building of St Andrew’s Church in 1912. Brickworks had already brought trade and prosperity to the town and the original clay pit used now forms an attractive lake measuring 100 ft deep in places.
Most recently Oxshott has become a celebrity spotter’s paradise. A huge number of sports stars in particular have been drawn to the village including Wimbledon winner Sir Andy Murray. One of the biggest reasons for the influx of sports stars is the training ground of Chelsea FC and millionaire footballers have been making Oxshott home ever since.
‘Village’ is certainly the right term. Within dancing distance of London’s West End and all the very best that one of the world’s greatest cities has to offer, Oxshott manages to retain its village feel and charm. The stunning Surrey countryside is right on the doorstep, while Heathrow Airport and the M25 are both within easy reach. More sporting credentials are on offer with Epsom, Sunningdale, Ascot, Twickenham, Wimbledon all offering huge occasions for sports fans. If you prefer your treats to be bite-sized, Oxshott and the surrounding area also offers some incredible eateries. It’s no wonder so many dream of planning their Oxshott removals.
