    About Portugal

    A Portuguesa
Alfredo Keil & Henrique Lopes de Mendonça
Adopted as the national anthem in 1910, the song was originally written in part as a response to Britain’s demands regarding territorial control in Africa. Both Portugal and Britain had colonised large parts of Africa and certain areas were hotly contested between the nations. Britain’s stance and Portugal’s reaction was one of the main catalysts for the Portuguese Revolution. The King and Prince Regent were both killed during the revolution and the younger son (now King), fled to Britain where he lived in suburban Surrey. He became a popular figure, even judging local flower shows. Despite the hiccough, the two nations have always been firm friends, the Anglo-Portuguese Alliance is the longest running international alliance and dates back to the Treaty of Windsor in 1386.
Bandeira de Portugal (Flag of Portugal)
The flag which featured the colours of the Republican Party was officially recognised on the 30th of June, 1911, after the fall of the monarchy.
“Esta é a ditosa Pátria minha amada.” (“This is my blissful beloved homeland.”)
The motto is featured on the national coat of arms.
    Coat of arms
Also formerly recognised on the 30th of June, 1911, the coat of arms features the Portuguese shield which remains largely unchanged from the 12th century.
    The Rooster of Barcelos
The legend of the rooster revolves around a young stranger, passing through the town of Barcelos on pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in the Middle Ages. He was accused and found guilty of a recent robbery and sentenced to hang. On the day of execution he appealed to the judge, pointing to a rooster he declared, “It is as certain I am innocent as that rooster crows when they hang me!” The judge had him dragged away but at the moment of his execution the rooster crowd, the judge rushed to the gallows and ordered the prisoner be set free.
Lavender farms cover huge areas of the country and it has traditionally been used as a herbal remedy and cooking ingredient. Lavender is now grown on an industrial scale across Portugal. The national tree is the cork oak (quercus suber), Portugal produces over 70% of the world’s cork.
Like many European nations, Portugal is obsessed with football. Entire newspapers are dedicated nothing but ‘the beautiful game’. Portugal has produced some of the greatest ever players including Eusebio and Christiano Ronaldo who has helped the nation win the UEFA European Championships and the first ever UEFA Nation’s League. He has won football’s top individual prize, the Ballon d’or, 5 times and is one of the most decorated players of all time.
    Body Content
Portugal doesn’t have an official national animal.
Consisting of dried, salted codfish soaked in milk, bacalhau dates back to the 16th century and is a staple of this seafaring nation. Portugal also gave the world piri piri sauce, a hot chili sauce that is commonly used to spice up chicken.
Assembleia da República (Assembly of the Republic)
The Portuguese government consists of a single house, the Assembly of the Republic which is democratically elected. Portugal also has a President, who sits 5-year terms. He is supported by a Council of State, 7 members chosen by the Assembly.
The country was first recognised in 1143 and is one of Europe’s oldest countries as it has remained as a national state since that time. Constitutionally it has changed and became a republic in June 1911. Portugal was invaded by France and Spain in 1808 during the Napoleonic Wars but were beaten out of Portugal by the British and Portuguese armies. Portugal wasn’t invaded during WWII and remained neutral, largely to keep Spain from joining the Axis Powers, however the Portuguese government did unofficially work with Britain.
The Anglo-Portuguese alliance is the oldest political alliance in the world and has existed since 1386.
