    5 Quickfire Sandhurst Facts

    1. Wooded Hill
The name ‘Sandhurst’ is derived from the sandy soil and ‘hurst’ meaning wooded hill. The same onomatology can’t be applied to England football hero Sir Geoff Hurst. He isn’t a wooded hill.
    2. Princes
The Royal Military Academy moved to Sandhurst, from nearby Marlow, during the Napoleonic Wars (1813). The academy is notable for the number of princes that have passed through (like our own Harry and William), including princes from Albania, Bahrain, Bhutan, Brunei, Greece, India, Jordan, Luxemburg, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Thailand and other nations.
    3. A Bit Ropey
The military academy’s tug of war team has won the Tug of War World Championship three times. So, should you find your car stuck in mud near the academy, you know who to call.
    4. Alumni
There are a number of other well-known faces (and voices) that attended the academy including; Major Tim Peake (astronaut), Murray Walker (voice of F1 racing), James Blunt (singer), Will Carling (rugby player), Keith Floyd (TV chef), Ian Fleming (James Bond author) and Sir Winston Churchill.
    5. Cate & ‘enry
Henry VIII’s older brother Prince Arthur was a regular visitor to the area and passed through on route to meeting his bride, Catherine of Aragon when they were both 15 years old. Although 5 years younger, Henry would go on to take his brother’s Sandhurst hunting lodge, his crown and even his widow.

Darryn and Kyle, the two removal men were just brilliant in carrying out their duties. Nothing was too much trouble. They are an asset to your company and great Ambassadors for your business. My wife and I felt on occasions they went above and beyond the normal service and went out of their way to help ease the process and stress of moving.

    - Andy Cookson – June 2021

The two crew movers that moved me are exceptional. Polite, hardworking, and professional. Nothing was too much, no problems or complaints. They packed, moved me out, and moved me in. Constantly ensuring everything was where I wanted it and fine tune placement of my items. I could not have moved in without their, and the team at Armishaws efforts. Thank you for getting (injured) me, and my family in our new home safe and complete.

    - Alan Edmunds - June 2021

Excellent removals experience on a two day local move in Somerset. Despite hail, the removals men did a fantastic job, and kept a sense of humour throughout. Nothing was too much trouble putting things where we wanted them in various sheds when we arrived. Toby and Ben made the experience SO much more fun, and less stressful. Cannot recommend them too highly.

    - Helen Williams – May 2021

    Early Days

According to local legend, Ambarrow and Edgebarrow are burial mounds (barrows) that mark the passing of two opposing Viking/Anglo-Saxon armies after a huge battle. Gruesome and sadly not true, the two hills are actually naturally occurring topographic features. Sandhurst is named after the local geography, ‘hurst’ being a wooded hill, ‘sand’ referring to the sandy soil. In fact, there is very little evidence or record of Sandhurst during the Anglo-Saxon period.

    12th Century

    Over's Removals

It certainly didn’t make the Doomsday Book (1086) and wasn’t’ recorded at all until 1175 when the first tax record appears under Henry II. Yes, one thing remains constant… you will pay your taxes!

    14th Century

The small farming community on the very edge of Windsor Forest seems an unlikely spot that would eventually educate royalty from around the world, but it was just a sleepy homestead for centuries. The locals were given certain privileges allowing them to hunt, cut turf and use wood from the forest, although punishments were extremely harsh for anyone judged to have taken more than their entitlement. Prince Arthur, elder brother of Henry VIII, travelled through the location whilst wooing his future bride Catherine of Aragon (after his brother’s death Henry would also make her his bride and she was one of two of his six wives to outlive him).

    Over's Truck

    19th Century

Just two years before the Battle of Waterloo, the Royal Military Academy moved from its previous site in Marlow to Sandhurst. The rugged, terrain of the heathland at the edges of the forest made it a good location for training men, it was also close enough to London and important naval locations on the south coast.

The next big arrival was the railroad which helped speed up traffic immeasurably. The new rail network and establishment of two more major institutions, Wellington College and Broadmoor Hospital in nearby Crowthorne, saw the population boom as entire towns built up around the three major sites, serving the residents, students and providing staffing.

    Modern Sandhurst

The town is now mostly associated with the training academy; Prince William, Prince Harry, the King of Bahrain, King Hussein of Jordan, the Grand Duke of Luxemburg, Oswald Mosely, Sir Winston Churchill, Ian Flemming, James Blunt, Will Carling, Murray Walker, Keith Floyd, Tim Peake… The list of former students is as long as the rope used in tug of war. Sandhurst has a strange connection with tug of war and has even hosted the World Finals.

Today the modern town is full of trendy shops and coffee houses, good restaurants and offers easy transport connections for commuters to or from the town.
