A Very Short History of Sunningdale

100-200 AD

A small settlement appears on a stretch of the Roman road known as the Devil's Highway. In later years this will become the village of Old Windsor Common.

Circa 700

A Saxon chief named Sunna leaves his mark on the area, Sunninghill and Sunningdale will both be named after him.

1523

A small nunnery is built but later closed down by King Henry VIII's reformation, where the King and the Pope have a falling out over Henry's desire to divorce.

1797

The area is plagued by highwaymen. One such robber, Captain Snow drowns in December while fleeing the law. His horse refuses to cross Virginnia Water and he drowns while trying to swim across the icy water.

1840

Church authorities raise money to fund a school to replace two local "dame schools."

1842

A new 'National School' (state owned) opens on Church Road. Now Holy Trinity Primary, the school is still running today.

The next big steaming arrival is the railway as Sunningdale Station is opened.

1894

Sunningdale Parish Council is formed and Old Windsor Common officially becomes Sunningdale.

1901

Willie Park Junior designs and builds a golf course for the princely sum of £3,000, paid for by the newly formed Sunningdale Golf Club members.

1922

The New Course opens in November and both the course and the club remain at the heart of professional golf.

1926

In December the town makes world headlines when Agatha Christie goes missing from her home. 10,000 volunteers join search teams. Christie is found safe and well at a hotel in Harrogate, booked in under the name of her husband's mistress.
