A Very Short History of Wallingford

One of the first town’s visited by William of Normandy after his conquest. He orders a castle built to control the populace.

1086

One of only eighteen towns to have a population of 2,000 people.

1141

The castle is besieged three times during The Anarchy as King Stephen battles his cousin Empress Matilda for the throne.

The Treaty of Wallingford settles the fate of the English crown.

1155

King Henry II grants a charter of liberties to reward the town for supporting his mother.

1343

The town is hit by an outbreak of the plague.

Edward the Black Prince holds a number of jousting tournaments at the castle, one of his favourite homes.

1385

The prince’s wife, ‘the Fair Maid of Kent’ dies at the castle.

1642

Wallingford becomes a Royalist stronghold during the English Civil War.

William of Orange stays overnight on route to London, to be claimed King in the Glorious Revolution.

The town stocks and pillory post (both used for public punishment) are removed.

Author Agatha Christie moves to Wallingford.

Wallingford itself moves home, thanks to the 1972 the Local Government Act when it is moved from Berkshire to become part of Oxfordshire.
