    5 Quickfire Wembley Facts

    1. Eifel Wembley Tower
Wembley Tower was the brainchild of Sir Edward Watkins MP. An ambitious man, Watkins had already tried to connect his many rail companies with France by building a tunnel under The English Channel. He invited Gustav Eifel himself to design the tower to be taller than the French construction, Eifel refused (citing his allegiance to France) and a new eight-legged, 1,200 ft (366 m) design was set upon, 150 ft taller than the Eifel Tower. Work began on “Watkins Folly” in 1892 but Watkins reduced the number of legs to save money. This caused subsidence and with the lack of funds the project was halted after only reaching first base. What became known as ‘The London Stump’ was pulled down in 1907.
    2. Park Life
But Watkins did build Wembley Park, a huge green recreational site for Londoners to enjoy with sports pitches, a theatre, gardens, bandstands, a lake and a, erm, stump.
    3. Wembley Stadium
The construction of the Empire Stadium (now Wembley Stadium) started 10th January 1922, on the site of the failed tower. Built in just 300 days (unlike the current stadium which overran, taking 5 years to build) it housed the 1923 Cup Final, Bolton Wanderers v. West Ham. Official attendance should have been 127,000 but 210,000 managed to squeeze in spilling onto the pitch. The game was halted and PC George Scorey and his white horse, Billy cleared the pitch in what became known as ‘The White Horse Final’.
    4. Big Bang Theory
An estimated 9,000 bombs fell on Wembley during WWII. Some of them failed to detonate and are occasionally dug up to this day. So, if you are planning on digging a veg patch at your new home… Just sayin’.
    5. Wembles
Famous Wembley residents include; Raheem Stirling (footballer), Sir Lenny Henry (comedian), Keith Moon (musician), Charlie Watts (musician) Claire Raynor (journalist) and Sir Henry Cooper (boxer and first man to knock down Muhammad Ali).

Darryn and Kyle, the two removal men were just brilliant in carrying out their duties. Nothing was too much trouble. They are an asset to your company and great Ambassadors for your business. My wife and I felt on occasions they went above and beyond the normal service and went out of their way to help ease the process and stress of moving.

    - Andy Cookson – June 2021

The two crew movers that moved me are exceptional. Polite, hardworking, and professional. Nothing was too much, no problems or complaints. They packed, moved me out, and moved me in. Constantly ensuring everything was where I wanted it and fine tune placement of my items. I could not have moved in without their, and the team at Armishaws efforts. Thank you for getting (injured) me, and my family in our new home safe and complete.

    - Alan Edmunds - June 2021

Excellent removals experience on a two day local move in Somerset. Despite hail, the removals men did a fantastic job, and kept a sense of humour throughout. Nothing was too much trouble putting things where we wanted them in various sheds when we arrived. Toby and Ben made the experience SO much more fun, and less stressful. Cannot recommend them too highly.
