A Very Short History of West Sussex

500,000 BCE

The first signs of humans moving to West Sussex were discovered at Boxgrove, these are oldest human remains found in Britain.

43 CE

The Romans land on the Sussex coast, beginning their conquest of the British Isles.

A Roman Palace is built new near Chichester. It wasn’t rediscovered until 1960.

Roman Emperor Honorius tells his local leaders, he won’t help defend them from raiding Saxons.

477

King Aelle arrives with just 3 ships and makes himself at home. The new kingdom of the ‘Suth-Seaxe’ (South Saxons) gives the area its name.

1066

William the Conqueror grants land rights to his noblemen, including Chichester and Arundel. The following year construction begins on new castles to control the native population.

King John steps ashore at Shoreham on route to being crowned King of England.

1216

Chichester Castle is besieged by rebel barons angry at King John, who recaptures the castle a year later, before destroying it.

1545

Following the sinking of the Mary Rose, French ships are chased across the South coast, landing at sites such as Shoreham, where they attack and burn towns.

Arundel Castle is besieged during the English Civil War. After three weeks it surrenders to Parliamentarian forces.

1651

King Charles II flees to France from Shoreham Harbour having been defeated by Cromwell at the Battle of Worcester.

1832

Customs Officers and around 200 smugglers fight a battle on Worthing Beach as the bootleggers are caught landing 300 barrels of booze. Thirsty locals help many of the smugglers escape.

Gatwick Aerodrome is built. It goes on to become one of the world’s busiest airports.

1990

Bognor Regis breaks records with 2,237 hours of sunshine in a year and West Sussex is named the UK’s sunniest county with an average of 1,902 hours of sun.
